Bede's Live working methodology

Radio is an optional subject for students from First to Sixth year of High School. At the beginning of the year, pupils choose which subjects they wish to study in English, in addition to the curricular ones.

Although in 2018 the subject already existed, only recorded programmes were made. On May 2nd of this current year, the school launched its Internet radio: Bede's Live. The name of the station was voted by the Bede's community with the aim of making it a tool within reach and with the participation of all.

Nowadays, there are four Radio courses that supply live programmes on the three days of the week we are on air. There is at least one groupin each class that is responsible for producing and performing the shows. On the other hand, we also included the participation of those who did not select the subject, but have great interest in Communication.

The radio genres were chosen by the students. They can be radio technicians / operators, columnists, producers and anchors. The idea is that everyone can change -if they want to- their task and try different roles, according to their profile.

All the programmes take place after a Radio class or in a break designated one month in advance. This allows the students clarify the questions that arise during the production process. Each issue is raised as a problem to solve.

The proposed activities promote cooperative, collaborative and team work, and the elaboration of critical thinking and opinion. The acquisition of the second language is deepened, in relation to news and relevant information in an educational context. The broadcasts are the product of creativity, spontaneity and group effort. By dealing with different themes in each opportunity, the radio allows them to learn permanently about topics of interest and even others they discover during the research.

Assessment

It is related to the development of each individual. We use a grid that establishes the parameters to determine the evolution of oral and written work, as well as the presentation of the running order (plan to follow during the programme). The aspects that are evaluated are: the understanding of tasks and the input provided in class, level of interest in the exercise, research for the production of the columns (information collection and elaboration of a piece on their own), justification of their arguments, expression  and explanation of opinion, fluency and organization of the presentation. Each correction starts with the previous individual work as a basis. The tasks attend to the needs of the students. For example, people who need to be in movement (kinesthetic learners) are usually the ones who want to be reporters outside the studio.

In addition, willingness to work and effort to improve their communication are particularly valued, as well as group dynamics and positive attitude towards work.

Each broadcast is configured as an individual evaluation on an individual and group work. We use an informal continuous assessment strategy.

Besides, students are asked to make self-assessment about their performance. At the end of each show, children receive feedback on the points to improve and those aspects in which they were successful. The loss of inhibition in front of a microphone is easily achieved when the person feels confident and supported. Highlighting achievements is fundamental for individual and collective development.

Each class starts with some questions that guide the work: what kind of radio do we wish to do?, how do we express ourselves? and what do want to say? Students participate in the choice of format, music and art pieces, and we are open to ideas that may appear inside and outside the classroom.

Bede's Live is part of an institutional project that provides tools to improve students' oral and written communication. According to this plan, the school also offers Journalism as an optional subject.
